South Bronx Early Leadership Academy - Owl Pellet Lab

VIRTUAL OWL PELLET LAB

South Bronx Early College Academy (SBECA) students are learning about what owls eat by examining owl pellets.  They began by watching a video about the subject during the first lesson from a special elective created as a result of educator Danielle Corbin’s collaboration with the Youth Veterinarian Initiative.

EXAMINING THE PELLETS

During their second lesson, the students examined actual owl pellets.  They measured their length, weighed them, and pulled them apart to find the remains of the animals the owls had eaten.

IDENTIFYING BONES

Owl pellets contain the skeletal remains of the animals the owls have eaten.  The students used an illustrated guide to identify the bones in the pellets they dissected.
