YVI Book Club & Merit Badge Program - Unusual Chickens for the Exceptional Poultry Farmer

UNUSUAL CHICKENS FOR THE EXCEPTIONAL POULTRY FARMER
by Kelly Jones

Our YVI book club participants learned a lot about feeding and caring for chickens as they explored this whimsical tale about a twelve-year-old girl named Sophia.

For their assignment, they drew pictures of the chicken they remembered most from the story.

3RD YVI BOOK CLUB & MERIT BADGE PROGRAM ZOOM CALL – January 21, 2023

Genesis Valiente from ETOILE ACADEMY in Houston, TX and several eighth-graders from HOLY FAMILY SCHOOL in Chicago, IL met each other for the first time when they joined this call to discuss the story line from Unusual Chickens.

None of the Holy Family students wanted to keep a chicken.

Genesis talked about how she used to keep chickens when her family lived in Honduras.  She shared that she cried when her favorite chicken was killed to serve as dinner.

Ms. Danielle Corbin represented students from South Bronx Early College Academy during the call.  She reported that her students didn’t like the book because it focused too much on chickens!
