Born in Beijing and settled in France for twenty years, Yu Zhao received dual training in Western and Chinese arts. Her encounter with contemporary dance, from which she draws its approach and philosophy, was decisive to her art.
Yu has also passionately researched writings in visual art in ancient China: these reflections became the sources for her own creation. Painting is thus a place of experimentation and meditation for her.
Under an identical style, each of her paintings reveals a unique universe.
As an artist associated with the Nichido Gallery in Paris, Yu regularly exhibits in salons in France and China.
Yu’s contribution to COVID-19 PAGES is called “Ile Idylique.” Here’s the story behind this work:
“Ile idylique was my first painting after three months of absence from my art studio.
“It was June and the weather was delicious, with a fresh new vegetation and flowering all around the building, which is near a canal.
“This regeneration of nature inspired me. I wanted to create the picture of an idyllic world, where I’d like to live.
“We all have to keep a piece of paradise in our heart despite the crisis outside. My painting is meant to provide some images of these inner landscapes.
“‘Be conscious of the present beauty and bring some light to the darkness, that’s the purpose of my art.'”
