COVID-19 PAGES Featured Artist – MINA AKBARI

Mina Akbari is from Iran, a country carrying a rich culture and history in the chaos of the Middle East. In her paintings, she uses contemporary visual language to represent her interpretation of Iranian-Middle East history and culture.

Mina’s paintings allude to the political, chaotic, and shocking situations in Iran and the Middle East. Her main inspirational resource is oriental rugs, which carry a long history and are part of her identity.

Through her contribution to COVID-19 PAGES, “Recording History: COVID-19,” Mina intends to record the history in the format of Persian rugs. She likes to revive her ancestors’ habit of depicting their culture and history using threads on the loom, because they did not have access to any other medium.

The center of the painting includes three shapes of the coronavirus and super-stylized birds that are common in Persian rugs. Borders showcase decorative calligraphy. Mina plans to make a Persian rug based on this painting in near future.
