Candace Allen is one of five Tallahassee, Florida artists to contribute to COVID-19 PAGES. Her work has been described as conveying her story of “who we are and where we came from” through the medium of layered and cut paper.
Candace’s contribution to COVID-19 PAGES is called “Generations of Women.” Mothers and motherhood are her inspiration for this work:
“Perhaps one of the most common, as well as the most incredible, attributes that we as children observe in our mothers is their unwavering ability to expand their care to fit the growing needs of their families.
“A sort of super power, this care of their children, spouses and home often challenges the boundaries of finance, tools, and even time itself. And yet, those in their care and under their ever-present hand thrive and are secure in the measure of safety, comfort and love they give every day.
“During these unforeseen and unprecedented times, as schools, restaurants, doctor’s offices, and businesses close their doors to flatten the curve, we bear witness to the matriarchs of our families becoming our teachers, our nurses, our chefs, and our business women — all within the safety of our homes.
“I marvel at these women.
“The work I have had the honor of producing celebrates the strength and legacy of motherhood during this global pandemic and highlights the impact felt by each generation of women present in our world so rapidly by transformed it.”
