Through your gifts for our Reading Never Stops literacy initiative, Bloom Academy Charter School in Houston, TX has received over 1000 books from WIF for its Kindergarten-2nd grade classroom libraries since January 2020!
By March 2020, Bloom students had already made remarkable progress with their reading skills:
- 59% of kindergartners were able to read at or above grade level.
- 71% of first graders grew one or more reading levels.
- 31% of kindergarten and first graders grew two or more reading levels.
Reading aloud to young children is not only one of the best activities to stimulate language and cognitive skills; it also builds motivation, curiosity, and memory. Your donations also support the establishment of a virtual story time program so that students will be able to listen to children’s book authors read their stories.
We are actively exploring the possibility of extending this story time to Bloom’s sister institution, Memphis Merit Academy in Memphis, Tennessee, to “plant the seed” of travel in the minds of students at both schools.
