YVI Book Club & Merit Badge Program - A Day in the Life of a Poo, a Gnu, and You

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A POO, A GNU, AND YOU
by Mike Barfield and Jess Bradley

This book was extremely popular among our book club participants.

We asked students to evaluate it as a book critic would, giving it a rating and explaining why they chose that rating.
To reinforce their learning, students also drew their favorite character from the book.

ETOILE ACADEMY – Houston, TX

All Etoile Academy 5th graders gave A Day in the Life of a Poo, a Gnu, and You at 4 or 5 out of 5 stars. They cemented what they learned from their reading by drawing their favorite character from the book.

MARION P. THOMAS CHARTER SCHOOL STEAM ACADEMY – Newark, NJ

Seventh-grade students at Marion P. Thomas Charter School STEAM Academy also rated the book at 4-5 stars. Several of them submitted drawings of their favorite character in the book.

SOUTH BRONX EARLY COLLEGE ACADEMY – Bronx, NY

Twenty-five (25) 6th graders at South Bronx Early College Academy created comics based on their favorite character in A Day in the Life

Science teacher Danielle Corbin gathered their work and displayed it on a bulletin board for the entire school to see!

4TH YVI BOOK CLUB & MERIT BADGE PROGRAM ZOOM CALL – February 25, 2023

Neither Etoile Academy nor Marion P. Thomas STEAM Academy students were shy about expressing their opinions on the subjects discussed and questions asked during this joint Zoom call.

Every student who submitted a bonus drawing told the group why the selected the character they drew and what they remembered about that character because they drew it.

Students got to know each other better by stating their likes and dislikes regarding foods, swimming, and other topics.

Most of the students said preferred life sciences to earth sciences.

Many said they’d be willing to live underwater in a specially designed space so they could observe sea creatures in their natural habitat.

Ms. Danielle Corbin represented students from South Bronx Early College Academy during the call.  She reported that her students were creating their own comics as part of their review of the book. They were uploaded to this photo gallery once they were submitted.
